How to cancel an ASIC business name

Source review: 2026-11-06. General procedural information, not legal or tax advice. Check the linked ASIC instructions before lodging; forms, fees and portal screens can change.

    Before you start

    • Confirm you are the holder or authorised to cancel the name.
    • If replacing the name, register the new name first.
    • If a purchaser needs the same name, use the transfer process instead.

    How to complete the process

    • Sign in to ASIC Connect and select the registered business name.
    • Start the cancellation transaction and review the holder and name details.
    • Confirm the declaration and submit the cancellation request.
    • Keep acknowledgment and verify the final registration status.

    After lodgement or completion

    • Update trading documents and records and check whether other registrations need separate action.

    Important limits and exceptions

Cancelling a business name does not deregister a company, cancel an ABN or end a trust. Each has a separate process.

    Keeping the company record complete

Keep approvals, consents, submitted documents and lodgement receipts with the entity record. EntityFlo can help organise records and supported workflows; guidance about a form does not mean EntityFlo supports direct lodgement of that form. Website FloSec cannot sign, lodge or access your private company records.
