How to register a business name with ASIC

Source review: 2026-11-06. General procedural information, not legal or tax advice. Check the linked ASIC instructions before lodging; forms, fees and portal screens can change.

    Before you start

    • Check whether a separate business name is required and confirm the intended holder.
    • Check name availability and eligibility, including the relevant Australian business number requirements.

    How to complete the process

    • Start from ASIC’s company and business-registration guidance and follow the Business Registration Service pathway.
    • Enter the business-name holder, proposed name and required identifiers.
    • Review the registration period and current official fee before paying.
    • Submit and keep the registration details, expiry date and linking information.

    After lodgement or completion

    • Link the registration to ASIC Connect when needed and diarise renewal.

    Important limits and exceptions

Business-name registration does not create a company or grant trade mark protection. A change in holder can require a transfer rather than a simple details edit.

    Keeping the company record complete

Keep approvals, consents, submitted documents and lodgement receipts with the entity record. EntityFlo can help organise records and supported workflows; guidance about a form does not mean EntityFlo supports direct lodgement of that form. Website FloSec cannot sign, lodge or access your private company records.
