How to transfer an ASIC business name to a new holder

Source review: 2026-11-06. General procedural information, not legal or tax advice. Check the linked ASIC instructions before lodging; forms, fees and portal screens can change.

    Before you start

    • Agree the new holder and check whether a new ABN means a transfer is required.
    • Confirm access to the existing registration and the incoming holder’s registration details.

    How to complete the process

    • The existing holder starts the transfer through ASIC Connect.
    • Provide the generated transfer number securely to the incoming holder.
    • The incoming holder registers the business name using that transfer number.
    • Track completion; ASIC cancels the outgoing registration within 28 days.

    After lodgement or completion

    • Confirm the incoming holder’s registration and new expiry and linking details.

    Important limits and exceptions

ASIC states a transfer number is valid for four months and 28 days. A transfer is different from cancelling a name without arranging the new holder’s registration.

    Keeping the company record complete

Keep approvals, consents, submitted documents and lodgement receipts with the entity record. EntityFlo can help organise records and supported workflows; guidance about a form does not mean EntityFlo supports direct lodgement of that form. Website FloSec cannot sign, lodge or access your private company records.
